The Story Bus may not travel long distances when it rolls through the streets of Newark, but it regularly moves across time and space, through the lives of people who transform their past into living history

Stories shared on the bus take us through the memories of participants, often traveling down nostalgic roads where ancestors speak and bygone days are replayed. A child remembers a housing project that has long since been demolished; a high school basketball player gets noticed by Newark’s first Black mayor; a student walkout marks the beginning of a long political career. These are a few of the vivid images Newark’s seasoned residents have shared. They bring alive for us a more innocent time, before the uprising and disinvestment took over the narrative. Their accounts are infused with hope and aspiration, and through this reminiscing we get a clearer picture of the here and now. Places have a funny way of getting into our DNA, and the vibrant character of Newark resides deep inside its residents.
